Budget is cheapest at Portland Airport for an Intermediate car, averaging £43 a day over the last 12 months from 1,872 prices, but you need a credit card. Budget has an airport desk and scores 74/100 from 30 recent reviews, so the lower price does not mean choosing an unscored supplier. For an Intermediate car over the same 12 months, Hertz averages £56 a day from 1,797 prices, £13 more a day, and scores 83/100 from 520 recent reviews. If you consider Avis instead, Avis does not yet have enough reviews for a score.

The cheapest company can cost you a longer queue or a bigger deposit, so check the review score and desk wait beside each car in the results before you book.

At Portland Airport, typical deposits range from £151 with Budget or Sixt to £227 with Avis, so check your card limit as well as the hire price. Only 1 of the 8 companies accepts a debit card without a car-specific restriction, while 5 require a credit card. The other 2, Hertz and Sixt, accept debit cards for some cars only, so do not treat either as an unconditional debit-card option. Filter for a debit card before comparing prices, then check the deposit and card rule beside your chosen car. Extras charged at the desk are listed under each car with their price.

If you bring your own child seat, check your airline's rules first: most carry one free, some charge.

At Portland Airport, check card restrictions and allow time for the desk queue before planning your drive away. 5 of the 8 companies require a credit card, so do not arrive with only a debit card unless you have checked your chosen car's terms. Hertz and Sixt accept debit cards for some cars only, while Thrifty accepts them without that car-specific restriction. If you need a prompt departure, allow for average desk waits of 22 minutes at Avis or 21 minutes at Thrifty, compared with 4 minutes at National.

For 4 people with 4 bags, choose an Intermediate car such as a Volkswagen Jetta at Portland Airport, averaging £43 a day for November 2026 when booked around a month before your trip. For November 2026 at that lead time, a Compact car such as a Nissan Versa averages £40 a day, £3 less a day, but seats 5 while taking only 3 bags, so choose it only if your luggage fits. A Fullsize car such as a Chevrolet Malibu averages £49 a day, £6 more a day, and seats 6 but still takes only 4 bags, so stepping up does not add luggage capacity. Over the last 12 months, 100% of cars offered are automatic, so you do not need to seek out an automatic specifically. If you want a hybrid, filter for one before choosing: hybrids account for 3% of cars offered over that period, and electric cars are not offered.
